During the transition to the new owners (the month of January) we are offering specials on shoes we have IN STOCK. Every pair is $10 off. Take a new (i.e., not one already pre-paid) group class and get $20 off a pair of shoes. Take a new private lesson and get $30 off a pair of shoes. These offers may not be combined, and may not be used on new shoe orders. But you can repeat them (for example, take two private lessons and get $30 off two pairs of in stock shoes). Dresses! Hotlanta Results: Congratulations to the Academy Ballroom folks who competed in Hotlanta. Julia & Igor took 1st place int he Pro Standard Championship. Tom & Julia took 3rd places for all three dances (W/T/Q) in Full Bronze International Standard Pro/Am. Jackie & Johnny took 1st Places for Latin Paso Doble (Pre-Bronze and Inter. Bronze) Pro/Am. Walter & his student also placed well.
Just call him Mr. Gold Medals! Tom Lancaster has won 6 first place awards in American Rhythm and 6 first place awards in American Smooth, dancing with Emily Loyless at the United States Dance Championships in Orlando. And all of these heats were danced before 9 in the morning! UPDATE: Tom has now danced his final 2 heats of the competition--both International Standard Waltz with Julia Ivleva...and got two more first place medals! That's 14 for 14. Hmmmm, maybe Tom should enter MORE heats.
New Salsa Group Class Series: In July we are starting two 4-week series group classes. Salsa I will be on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., Salsa II will be on Thursdays at 7 p.m. -- these classes will preview as drop-in groups during July and start as preregistered series in August on Tuesday nights (Salsa I at 7 p.m. and Salsa II at 8p.m.). Sign up early to reserve your spot and get a discount. Got Dresses? Academy Ballroom is now carrying ballroom and party outfits. If we don't
have exactly what you want, we can order a custom dress for you. (Custom dresses take 4 to 6
weeks to arrive, so plan NOW for summer comps and showcases!). Not ready to buy a dress? Then
rent one for your showcase or competition performances.

Charles and Jackie are competing in American Smooth, the rest of the team is competing in International
Standard. Several students
are also going along to watch and cheer the team. The group is carpooling to Nashville. Heike and
Jackie are competing in dresses rented from the studio collection.
Congratulations to Julia Ivleva and Igor Litvinov who were here coaching on May 11--They took FIRST PLACE in International Standard in their most recent two competitions: the Atlanta Open and the Emerald Ball (held in Los Angles in May 2008).

Instructors in the News! Academy Ballroom Instructors Richard and Alisha taught a group class and performed at the International Day of Dance at Morristown College. Academy Ballroom signature cocktail: For the anniversary celebration, Andy at Tennessee Bartenders came up with a custom cocktail: the Academy Ballroom! The recipe begins: "Combine all ingredients but grenadine in shaker and do the cha cha..."

ABK dancers in the news! WATE TV aired a story (Tuesday night 11/27) about the impact of "Dancing with the Stars" on the local dance scene. Several of our dancers are featured in the spot (Johnny Tang, the Hampton girls, Gary and Maureen, Lloyd and Angelia, and Robert Mitchell teaching the reporter, Ann Keil, to dance). NEW time for Friday parties! To go with our upcoming "dinner and dancing" promotion, starting November 9th, our Friday night parties will be from 8 p.m. till 10:30 p.m. -- mark your calendar to remember the new time.

Club ORNL dance opened to friends of employees: The Club ORNL dance scheduled for
September 22,
has been opened up to include friends of ORNL employees (e.g., if you know Johnny, Heather, Bev,
Betsy, or Lloyd, to name a few, you qualify). This event will include heavy hors d'ouevres,
cash bar, group classes by Johnny and Heather Tang, and a few exhibition performances during the evening
of dance.
The Knoxville Rising Star/Newcomer's Ball competition is being rescheduled for a later date. The official information number for this comp is 865-539-2255. It will still be held at our studio in Downtown West Village. Take advantage of the extra time to practice! Bridal Show WINNERS: The winners of the 2007 Knoxville Bridal Show Wedding Package are Megan H. and her fiance Jake B. -- Jake and Megan get 5 private lessons and 5 parties to help them get ready for their wedding dance. Swinging Sundays: We have added a regular Sunday party -- East Coast/West Coast Swing Jam! This high energy party ($10/person) starts at 7 p.m. and will feature DJ'd music by David Valentine. Dances will be East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing and a new "East Coast Blues" dance. on the second Friday of each month. The Brad Walker parties are also our monthly "dress up" parties. 
Champion Latin Dance Workshop with Olga Rodionova! World, International, & United Kingdom
Professional Latin Finalist Olga Rodionova will be at Academy Ballroom Knoxville this weekend.
There will be a workshop from 2:30-4pm on Sunday, October 5th covering fundamental dance techniques
and styling on Samba, Cha-cha, and Rumba. Cost for the workshop is $25/person (no partner necessary).

Thanks from Ken! We really appreciate all the
well wishes and inquiries from everyone about Ken's recovery after his heart surgery. He is doing well and FINALLY going to take it easy
in retirement. Although he will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operation of the studio, he hopes to
still see everyone at the Friday night parties (just don't ask him to dance yet).
Next Tanya Coaching: Tanya Arnhold will be
back teaching in the studio on Tuesday, August 12. Tanya was one of the judges at our comp last year.

Summer Camp for Kids:
There's just one week left of our dance camp for children ages 5-15. The final week
will run 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Monday-Thursday. The remaining dates are July 21-24.
Dances covered will be Waltz, Tango, Swing, Salsa, and Merengue. Boys will learn lifts and dips.
Camp will include performances to showcase what has been learned. Price is $80/week for one week.

Bubba CAN dance! "Bubba" Jones will teach a Linedance workshop on
Saturday, July 12 from 6-8 p.m. ($15/person). This will be followed by our "Hoedown" party from 8-10 p.m.
($5/person). Music played will include two-step, swing, west coast, etc. Bring your favorite CD's
for requests! 
Boris' Birthday Bash! - Saturday April 19. All ballroom dancers are invited to help Claudette and
Boris McCubbin celebrate Boris' 40th birthday!
Music will be by Brad Walker Orchestra (ballroom)
followed by The Party Boys (DJ/swing).
Theme is "a 1940's Extravaganza"

USA Dance is back!
The Knoxville Chapter has gone to one dance a month (first Saturdays) rotating among the 3 studios.
The first dance back at Academy Ballroom will be March 1.
See Julia and Igor on TV! If you missed the studio show Feb. 2, you can see
Julia Ivleva and Igor Litvinov on "America's Ballroom Challenge" on PBS (WETP/WKOP -- channel 2 broadcast or cable,
9316 on DishNetwork). The show will air at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13.
It will be repeated at 5 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 and Monday, Feb. 18. It will also air on
Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m., 8 p.m., and 11 p.m., and again at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17.
The original performance of their showdance finale is posted on
NO PARTY at studio February 8! Instead we are encouraging everyone to go to the
Welcome Dance and Show at the USA Dance North Central Regionals, being held at Knoxville's downtown
Marriott February 9-10. The show is by Alain Doucet and Anik Jolicouer, 5 time world champions --
you don't want to miss this! Tickets are $20 and are available at the studio or online at the
MARDI-GRAS PARTY! Friday, February 1 is our Marti-gras party--the kickoff of our month long anniversary
celebaration. Wear your wildest party outfit and join us to party New Orleans style, with
lots of merengue, salsa, samba, and dixieland sounds.
Saturday, February 2 is our first anniversary! Join us for the BIG
celebration for Saturday, February 2 (which is BeaBopp's birthday). We'll have an afternoon of

Wanna dance like Prince Charming? Johnny Tang is unavailable for the Friday group classes
during November, because he is responsible for the dance scenes in the Oak Ridge Play House
production of "Cinderella"! Opening night for this play is Friday 11/16, with the last show on
Friday 11/30. On a related note, Johnny is having "Competition Prep" for Academy Ballroom students instead of his normal group classes on Saturdays 11/10 and 11/17. (Johnny's groups will resume on December 2, after the competition).
Latin Dance Workshop! Brian Jolly is back, and he's bringing Alison Epsom, star of stage
and screen. She's been featured in plays, musicals, and dance festivals. You may have seen
her as one of the Beauxbaton girls in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". Contact Johnny Tang
to schedule limited-availability private coachings. And don't miss the workshop on Sunday,
November 18 from 2:00-5:30 p.m. This is appropriate for ANY LEVEL, ANY STYLE dancer.

Costume Party will be held on October 26 with a LIVE Band--The Streamliners!
Wear your best swing era
costume (anything from monsters to movie stars) and compete in our costume contest. 
Tickets are
still available for the Black & White Ball, to be held Saturday, October 20,
from 8-11 p.m. Music will be
provided by the Brad Walker Orchestra. Tickets are $25/person, $45/couple and
include heavy
hors d'oeuvres, cash bar (one free drink per ticket), and doorprizes! Don your
best black and white outfit and join us as we roll out the red carpet for an

We now offer Belly Dance,
taught by Debka Ashton, Wednesdays at 11 a.m.
A 6 week series is $75. Debbie (who performs using the name "Debka") has studied belly
dance with top instructors throughout the world, including Dahlena, Ibrahim Farrar, Jillina,
Aziza, Zahra Zuhair, Rachel Brice, and Amir Thelib. The first belly dance teacher in Knoxville,
Debbie began teaching at the University of Tennessee in 1975. Ladies, this is a safe, healthy
exercise for all ages and levels! Advance registration is required. 
Samba/ChaCha workshop
with Brian Jolly: On September 23, we will have Brian Jolly (ranked
#2 in the World) here for a workshop (2:30-4 p.m.) and a limited number of private coachings. The $25 workshop will cover Samba and ChaCha. To reserve a time for a private coaching, contact
